The 2008 My Hero Award is presented to those who show unwavering courage
and perseverance in the battle to eliminate HIV and AIDS.
In 2008 we salute:
SAB Miller The unrelenting commitment of SABMiller’s Board, management, and staff in the fight against AIDS in the work-place has set an extraordinary, unprecedented model of corporate social responsibility in the public heath arena.
Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP For their commitment to providing pro bono legal services to individuals and community organizations that would otherwise be unable to access legal representation. We appreciate the firm’s belief that part of every attorney’s obligation to the community is to provide high-caliber legal services to people of limited means and to charitable and civic organizations.
Mario Testino We are inspired not only by Mario Testino’s commitment to the fight against HIV and AIDS, but his ability to use his talent to combat the stigma and discrimination that affects people living with the disease, in particular women and children in developing countries. He has demonstrated the kind of leadership in this fight that we look to honor with the "My Hero" award.
Alejandro Pompei This young activist is part of a new generation of people born with HIV, fighting against the epidemic. Alejandro’s work inspires youth impacted by HIV and AIDS in Latin America to develop their abilities and to voice their specific needs. He overcame the stigma associated with his HIV status and chooses to work against it, not only to improve his situation, but for other young adults facing similar circumstances.

The little girl gracing this year’s invitation is Shania, a healthy four year old who can pose in front of a camera like a supermodel. Give her a paintbrush and she can fill a canvas with rainbows and the letters in her name. Like all little girls, Shania’s dream is to become a ballerina or a supermodel, and she has the potential to fulfill these dreams.
Shania’s mother however was living with HIV but knew enough about her condition to seek help to protect her unborn child from contracting the disease. Through her doctor she was sent recycled HIV medication once a month from AFAI and as a result gave birth to a beautiful healthy child without a trace of HIV in her blood. Four years later and with AFAI’s continued assistance, Shania is working toward her dreams and is now enrolled in ballet classes at the Ballet Hispanico in New York City.
While this story has a hero, Shania’s mother, there are thousands of stories like this without such a happy ending. In fact, there are over 50,000 children already living with HIV and AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean who still need our support.
This year’s gala is about these 50,000 children and their families who, like Shania and her mother, with our help can go on to lead happy, healthy lives.
