AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) will launch a nationwide, weeklong medication recycling drive on August 18 through the 25th. In advance of the campaign, we have begun reaching out to AIDS organizations and community groups across the country to help us increase donations of HIV/AIDS medications and to build awareness of our recycling program, which over the past 15 years has shipped more than $70 million worth of antiretroviral medicine to people living with HIV or AIDS in 35 developing nations.
AFAI will host an open house at our Manhattan headquarters on August 4, from 11 am to 3 pm. Staff members will be available to provide complete details and answer all questions about the recycling drive.
“It’s a campaign whose beauty and power derive from its simplicity,” says Liliana Velasquez, Recycling Program and Marketing Manager at AFAI. “What could be simpler and more beautiful than turning potential waste product into life-saving treatment? We’re hoping that we can get our existing recycling partners to ratchet up their involvement, and bring in many new allies to help us spread the message.”
Organizations and community groups can join the recycling drive in two ways: by collecting medicine within their own facilities or encouraging their clients and supporters to donate directly to AID FOR AIDS. AFAI will support these individual recycling initiatives with electronic flyers that organizations can print out and post in strategic locations around their offices. AFAI will also arrange to pick up all collected medicines at the end of the drive. Organizations collecting medicine will receive recognition on our website and Facebook page.
Here are the collection guidelines:
All donated medicine must be unexpired;
No loose capsules or tablets will be accepted;
Liquids must come in sealed bottles;
For those concerned with confidentiality, AFAI removes all names from donated medicine bottles before shipping.
The primary focus of the campaign will be on collecting antiretrovirals, including:
•Protease Inhibitors (PI) Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTI)
•Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTI)
The most-urgently needed medications are:
• Atripla 600/300/200mg
• Sustiva 600mg
• Truvada 300/200mg
• Combivir 300/150mg
• Epivir 300mg
• Fuzeon 90mg
• Intelence 100mg
• Isentress 400mg
• Kaletra 200/50mg
• Prezista 600mg
• Retrovir 300mg
• Viramune 200mg
• Viread 300mg
The recycling drive will also accept medications to fight opportunistic infections, including antifungals/antimycotics and antivirals.
Additional information on the August campaign, and on AFAI’s Access to Treatment program, of which recycling is the key component, can be obtained by contacting Liliana Velasquez at 212 337-8043, ext. 302, or by email at .
“Over the past 15 years,” concludes AFAI founder and executive director Jesus Aguais, “we’ve had the joy of discovering how even the smallest-scale community initiative can reverberate around the world. We’re now looking to take that initiative to a new level of participation and we urge you all to join us.”

After a three-year absence, AID FOR AIDS International will be returning to the New York City Gay Pride Parade on Sunday, June 26th. And we welcome friends and supporters to join in celebrating our return, by walking with us down 5th Avenue and helping us spread our message to a million spectators along the parade route.
AFAI will again be sponsoring a float, ridden by a d.j, who’ll be pumping out music for 20 dancers. Staff members and supporters walking alongside will be passing out trinkets and information on AFAI and its activities. The parade kicks off at noon from 36th Street and 5th Avenue, and proceeds down 5th Avenue to the corner of Greenwich and Christopher Streets in the West Village.
The parade marks the 42nd anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in 1969, which are generally considered the beginning of the Gay Rights movement. Since 1986, the parade has also featured a moment of silence in recognition of the continuing battle against HIV and AIDS and the millions of lives lost. But over the years, the parade has evolved from a commemoration to more of a celebration. Today, it’s an occasion for having fun and expressing ourselves as individuals and as a community.

New York’s long, snowy winter of discontent is finally starting to fade into spring, meaning that it’s time to begin limbering up for the annual AIDS Walk New York 2011.
This year’s 6.2 mile walk is scheduled for May 15, beginning and ending in Central Park.
Sign-up begins at 8:30 am and the AIDS Walk commences at 10. Participants should enter the park at 59th Street and 5th Ave.
AIDS Walk New York, now in its 26th year, is the world’s single largest AIDS fundraising event. Last year, 45,000 walkers and 2,500 volunteers raised $5.7 million to combat AIDS, bringing the total amount raised in New York over the years to $116 million. The nationwide AIDS Walk movement to date has generated more than $500 million in donations. Proceeds from the New York event support the services provided by GHMC and dozens of other AIDS services organizations in the tri-state area.
AID FOR AIDS International, for its part, will once again be fielding a team at this year’s walk and we strongly invite you to join us. Last year, our AIDS Walk team raised more than $20,000, and we hope to far exceed that amount this year. AFAI uses much of the proceeds from AIDS Walk to support our New York Immigrant’s AIDS Link (NYIAL) program, which offers case management services to hundreds of immigrants in the New York metropolitan area who are living with HIV or AIDS. These services include assistance in obtaining entitlement benefits (rental assistance, health insurance), primary education, HIV testing and medicine monitoring. AIDS Walk donations are also used to support our efforts to collect and redistribute unused HIV/AIDS medications throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
Anyone interested in registering for AIDS Walk New York 2011 can do so at AID FOR AIDS TEAM. Simply click on “Register To Walk,” and you will be guided through the registration process.
Donation checks should be made payable to “AIDS Walk New York” or “AWNY” and should clearly indicate the name of the individual or organization you are sponsoring, either on the check or on a separate piece of paper; otherwise, your donation could be credited as a general donation. Checks can be mailed to AIDS Walk New York, Old Chelsea Station, P.O. Box 10, N.Y., N.Y. 10113-0010.
If you are interested in raising funds for AIDS Walk, there are multiple ways to go about it, including setting up your own fundraising Web page, hosting a fundraising party, using an employer’s matching gift program or asking a local merchant to contribute to your team by providing an incentive prize to motivate team members to increase their own fundraising efforts. For suggestions on these and other fundraising techniques, go to the “Fundraising Tips & Tools” page on the AIDS Walk New York website or call the AIDS Walk New York office at 212 807-WALK.
However you choose to participate in this most important and inspiring event, we look forward to seeing you on May 15th and welcoming you as part of the AFAI family.

On March 10, 2011, a special Off-Broadway performance of “Siudy: Entre Mundos,” will be held to benefit AFAI. The “Flamenco fantasia,” which will be in New York for a two-month engagement at the New World Stage 1 theatre, explores a whole new form of storytelling, combining the raw emotion of Flamenco and urban dance, with a powerful percussive beat.
“Between Worlds” tells the tale of a future world where water is scarce and desperate tribes go to war with each other over dwindling natural resources. The production is directed by Pablo Croce and choreographed by the international dance pioneer Siudy, who also performs in the show. The cast of 22 dancer/drummers features many of the finest performers from Latin America and other parts of the world.
This special event represents a major step for AFAI, as it will be the first in an ongoing series of social and cultural presentations aimed at expanding our fundraising and public relations activities.
The March 10 benefit will feature a post-performance cocktail party, at which 200 VIP audience members can meet and greet the show’s creators and cast. Tickets for the benefit are priced at $200 for VIPs and $100 for general admission, and can be purchased online through our website or ordered by phone by calling 212 337-8043.
We look forward to seeing you on the 10th. We anticipate a memorable evening.

The 2008 My Hero Award is presented to those who show unwavering courage
and perseverance in the battle to eliminate HIV and AIDS.
In 2008 we salute:
SAB Miller The unrelenting commitment of SABMiller’s Board, management, and staff in the fight against AIDS in the work-place has set an extraordinary, unprecedented model of corporate social responsibility in the public heath arena.
Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP For their commitment to providing pro bono legal services to individuals and community organizations that would otherwise be unable to access legal representation. We appreciate the firm’s belief that part of every attorney’s obligation to the community is to provide high-caliber legal services to people of limited means and to charitable and civic organizations.
Mario Testino We are inspired not only by Mario Testino’s commitment to the fight against HIV and AIDS, but his ability to use his talent to combat the stigma and discrimination that affects people living with the disease, in particular women and children in developing countries. He has demonstrated the kind of leadership in this fight that we look to honor with the "My Hero" award.
Alejandro Pompei This young activist is part of a new generation of people born with HIV, fighting against the epidemic. Alejandro’s work inspires youth impacted by HIV and AIDS in Latin America to develop their abilities and to voice their specific needs. He overcame the stigma associated with his HIV status and chooses to work against it, not only to improve his situation, but for other young adults facing similar circumstances.

The little girl gracing this year’s invitation is Shania, a healthy four year old who can pose in front of a camera like a supermodel. Give her a paintbrush and she can fill a canvas with rainbows and the letters in her name. Like all little girls, Shania’s dream is to become a ballerina or a supermodel, and she has the potential to fulfill these dreams.
Shania’s mother however was living with HIV but knew enough about her condition to seek help to protect her unborn child from contracting the disease. Through her doctor she was sent recycled HIV medication once a month from AFAI and as a result gave birth to a beautiful healthy child without a trace of HIV in her blood. Four years later and with AFAI’s continued assistance, Shania is working toward her dreams and is now enrolled in ballet classes at the Ballet Hispanico in New York City.
While this story has a hero, Shania’s mother, there are thousands of stories like this without such a happy ending. In fact, there are over 50,000 children already living with HIV and AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean who still need our support.
This year’s gala is about these 50,000 children and their families who, like Shania and her mother, with our help can go on to lead happy, healthy lives.
