Oscar winning documentary: The Blood of Yingzhou District

Oscar winning documentary: The Blood of Yingzhou District

In this Oscar-winning documentary short, Hong Kong filmmaker Ruby Yang and producer Thomas Lennon chronicle the lives of young orphans living in the Yingzhou district of China’s Anhui province. The piece features children whose parents have died from AIDS and who now face a life of painful choices. In particular, the film focuses on a silent boy named Gao Jun who’s been stigmatized and abandoned, kept away from other children for fear he will infect them.

This has particular significance to AFAI as the silent boy Gao Jun and several of the children featured in this movie are recipients of recycled antiretroviral medication from our ATAP program.

AFAI Staff members had the opportunity to meet personally with Eliza Petrow, a public health consultant working directly with these children in China. Ms. Petrow sought out AFAI staff at the International AIDS Conference in Mexico earlier this month, to personally thank them for their support and help providing pediatric antiretroviral medication.  This meeting gave AFAI an opportunity to view pictures Ms. Petrow had taken during a recent visit to the orphanage- images depicting youngsters once on their death beds, now playing with friends and participating in games and activities.

A very happy and healthy Gao Jun and his friends today.

This story serves not only as an example of the incredible work done every day at AFAI, but as inspiration for all. To help us save more children like Gao Jun please support our How To Save Child campaign.
