The local offices of AID FOR LIFE and AID FOR AIDS in Panama continue to provide support to migrants in the country, particularly those crossing the Darién jungle from Necoclí, Colombia, or entering through Chiriquí from Costa Rica. To date, we have supported more than 4,500 individuals.
Between October 2023 and November 2024, we conducted over 920 HIV tests in our intervention areas: Necoclí (Colombia), Darién (Panama), and Chiriquí (on the border with Costa Rica). These efforts have enabled the early detection of reactive cases and timely access to treatment. Additionally, more than 110 people have enrolled in the pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) program in Chiriquí and Necoclí, a vital tool for reducing the risk of contracting HIV.
At the exit of the Darién in Panama, we provide comprehensive support to migrants through our Integrated Care Center at the Migratory Reception Station (ERM). Here, migrants are registered and receive medical care along with basic assistance such as food and shelter. We also conduct awareness sessions on HIV and other STIs and ensure linkage to the healthcare system for those diagnosed, facilitating confirmatory testing through CD4 and viral load analysis. In coordination with the Ministry of Health (MINSA), we support access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and resource management to ensure timely care.
This work is especially critical as the Darién is one of the most dangerous points along the migration route. Migrants are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence, making the provision of these essential health services even more urgent for their safety and well-being.
Through these efforts, we reaffirm our commitment to the health and welfare of the migrant population. We provide comprehensive care, prevention initiatives, and access to essential treatments, recognizing the severe challenges and vulnerabilities migrants face in critical areas like the Darién. Our work continues tirelessly to ensure they receive the support they need for their health and protection.
