Created in 2004, ¿Cuánto Sabes? began as an innovative HIV primary prevention program for adolescents and youth across Latin America and the Caribbean. What started as an educational strategy focused on HIV gradually evolved into AID FOR AIDS’ core pedagogical platform, now used across multiple prevention, empowerment, and integration programs.
From the beginning, the model combined up-to-date scientific information on HIV, human rights, sexual and reproductive education, life skills, peer education methodology, and Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) to transform limiting beliefs and promote inclusive language. This structure allowed the program to go beyond health prevention and establish itself as a tool for leadership development and social transformation.
Over the years, the methodological strength of ¿Cuánto Sabes? allowed it to expand well beyond its original scope. Today the platform is applied across HIV and STI prevention, community health promoter training, empowerment of women and LGBTIQ+ communities, migrant integration processes, youth leadership programs, and institutional and community capacity building. More than a standalone program, ¿Cuánto Sabes? is the pedagogical framework that guides AFA’s educational and behavior change work across the organization.
Since its creation, ¿Cuánto Sabes? has reached more than 1.5 million young people across Latin America and the Caribbean, training agents of change in prevention, leadership, and community empowerment.
This was the program’s founding module and remains one of its central components. It is a structured primary prevention program with facilitator and participant manuals, a standardized curriculum, and a multiplier training system. Its content covers scientific information on HIV, combination prevention, human rights and non-discrimination, comprehensive sexual education, life skills, and NLP tools to challenge myths and limiting beliefs.
The program uses peer education methodology, training youth and community leaders to replicate knowledge in their own environments. Since 2004, this module has been implemented in eight countries across Latin America and the Caribbean, adapting to diverse cultural contexts.
Over time, the model incorporated adaptations for specific populations and contexts. In 2011, a specialized version was developed for LGBTIQ+ communities, incorporating in-depth discussions on sexual diversity, gender-based violence, and political advocacy. The methodology later expanded into migrant integration, prevention in mobility contexts, community empowerment, social leadership development, and institutional capacity building.
This evolution allowed ¿Cuánto Sabes? to grow from an HIV prevention program into a comprehensive training model.
