AID FOR AIDS

PANAMÁ

About

AID FOR AIDS Panama is a satellite office of AID FOR AIDS International. We have been present in the country since 2006. Since our arrival in Panama, AID FOR AIDS has provided services in Clayton, Panama City, empowering vulnerable communities through innovative programs that improve their quality of life. In 2007, we established the first Comprehensive Care Center for Children and Adolescents with HIV in Latin America at Hospital del Niño.

Since 2009, AID FOR AIDS Panama began its work in the Guna Yala Territory, a remote and hard-to-reach area, collaborating directly with the Guna people to implement the “¿Cuánto Sabes?” Education and Training Program focused on the HIV response. The training of hundreds of young people as agents of change and replication arose precisely because of the high levels of vulnerability and risk associated with HIV in the territory, making it urgent to empower Guna youth to take on an active and transformative role — becoming community leaders capable of spreading primary prevention, promoting self-care, and reducing stigma from within their own communities.

This effort was consolidated in 2014 as a historic milestone, becoming the first NGO with a permanent presence in the Guna Yala Territory, creating the “¿Cuánto Sabes?” Education and Training Center, which has provided early childhood education to boys and girls and has trained community multipliers, community leaders, and local medical staff.

In 2023, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MINSA), we inaugurated the first Comprehensive Care Center for Children, Adolescents, and Youth in the Chiriquí province, located at the Chiriquí Regional Hospital, expanding access to comprehensive care for people living with HIV in the region. Subsequently, starting in December 2025, MINSA inaugurated the TARV Clinic of David in a dedicated, exclusive building for comprehensive care, located in San Mateo, Doleguita, David district, Chiriquí province, where since January AFA Panama has been providing continuous care — strengthening the quality, accessibility, and dignity of services for people living with HIV in the province.

Current Programs

The “¿Cuánto Sabes?” program provides clear, accurate, and updated information about HIV to children, adolescents, youth, health professionals, people with HIV, their families, and the general public. Based on life skills defined by the World Health Organization, it uses neurolinguistic programming techniques to promote a healthy lifestyle, eradicate stigma and discrimination toward people with HIV, and empower participants with tools to improve their quality of life.

This program is aligned with UNAIDS’ four 95s (95% diagnosed, 95% on treatment, 95% with suppressed viral load, and 95% with better quality of life), and contributes to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 (Health and Well-being), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

AID FOR AIDS Panama facilitates access to free antiretroviral treatment (ART) for people with HIV who do not adapt to the regimen offered by the Ministry of Health and the Social Security Fund. In collaboration with treating physicians, we offer personalized treatment alternatives to guarantee their continuity and follow-up.

During periods of shortage in these institutions, AFA Panama donates additional ARVs, ensuring that people maintain their treatment without interruptions.

Unique in Panama, this program offers guidance and emotional, social, psycho-pedagogical, psychological, and nutritional support to children and adolescents with HIV, as well as their families. Through the Comprehensive Care Center located at Hospital del Niño since 2007 and the Comprehensive Care Center in Chiriquí province, inaugurated in 2023, minors are empowered from an early age with tools to manage their health, strengthen treatment adherence, and support their academic development.

The program includes psychological care, nutritional support, recreational activities, integration workshops, and entrepreneurship workshops, improving quality of life and fostering comprehensive well-being, in line with SDGs 3 (Health and Well-being) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
