About
AFA in the Dominican Republic was officially registered as an NGO in 2002 with the Access to Treatment Program. Since then, we have implemented a series of programs focused on contributing to the eradication of the pandemic and improving the quality of life of the most vulnerable groups affected by the virus, through skills development and empowerment.
AID FOR AIDS implemented education in care, treatment adherence, and knowledge about antiretrovirals for doctors and multidisciplinary healthcare provider teams.

Current Programs
Donation program for third and fourth-line antiretroviral medications, or latest-generation medications, that are not available in the national medication program, provided directly to individuals with continuous monitoring by their local treating physician and to regulatory institutions upon request, to cover deficits of certain therapy lines in the country’s medications. Additionally, we provide medication donations for prophylaxis and opportunistic diseases, coinfections, and HIV-related conditions.
Aims to provide guidance and emotional, social, and psycho-pedagogical support to children and adolescents with HIV and their families. Offers tools that facilitate empowerment of children and adolescents over their lives and health from early ages, strengthening adherence to medical treatments, as well as reinforcement in their academic activities.
Provide individual and/or group training to people with HIV and their families on antiretroviral treatments, nutrition, self-care, personal growth, among others.
Promote the creation of a culture of prevention and/or sexual protection in public and private educational centers, businesses, and the community at large. Additionally, conduct HIV detection tests to encourage people to know their diagnosis..
Comprehensive care service, endorsed and supervised by the national health system, which governs the guidelines and supervises compliance with indicators, according to criteria, in all areas, both online through the FAPPS information system, as well as physical medical records.
Inform and/or update health professionals with updated tools and knowledge for treatment processes and sensitization, in order to contribute with society against stigma and discrimination.
The “How Much Do You Know?” program is an innovative primary prevention program for HIV that uses neurolinguistic programming (NLP) as a cross-cutting axis, combining HIV education, sexual and reproductive health, and life skills proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), through peer education methodology (Multiplier Agents). It is aimed at empowerment, youth leadership development, and HIV prevention by developing a culture of healthy lifestyle that includes healthy and responsible sexuality.
Health promotion, teenage pregnancy prevention, and youth empowerment in communities, guiding them toward a responsible life, developing their capacities, and accompanying them in their life projects.
This program includes guidance and psychological support for abused people who engage in survival sex work, people sexually violated at work, child abuse, and any type of discrimination and gender-based violence.
Program for access to laboratory tests, imaging and medical studies, medication purchase, emotional/psychological support for people in the grieving process, economic support, and home visits to people with HIV.
Children with HIV who turn 18 must be transferred to an adult healthcare center, according to Dominican law, so we begin their preparation 2 or 3 years in advance, during which they receive diagnosis disclosure, prepare to take responsibility for their health, and are educated to be integrated into the work world, entrepreneurship, and university.

Are AID FOR AIDS and AID FOR LIFE the same?
No, AID FOR LIFE is a newer organization that was born from AID FOR AIDS through our constant efforts to help the migrant community. Currently, AFA focuses on HIV-related topics and AFL focuses on overall health, financial independence, and integration of the migrant community.
What type of support do you offer?
Prevention, HIV testing, antiretroviral treatment, psychosocial support, education, and specialized programs for children, adolescents, and abuse victims.
