AID FOR AIDS
VENEZUELA
About
AID FOR AIDS Venezuela began its work in 1996 when it started receiving monthly donations of antiretroviral medications (ARVs) from the AID FOR AIDS International headquarters located in New York City, with the purpose of saving the lives of Venezuelans living with HIV who at that time had no access to treatment.
The constant growth of support requests led, in 1998, to the official registration of AID FOR AIDS Venezuela, becoming the organization’s first office in Latin America. Since then, through the Treatment Access Program, antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been facilitated throughout the country, especially for people who have developed resistance to treatments available in the public health system or during periods of shortage.
In 2000, in response to the needs arising from this health situation, the Comprehensive Care Program for Children and Adolescents with HIV was established, offering socio-emotional support and medical accompaniment through partnerships with Victorino Santaella Hospital, the University Clinical Hospital, and the National Network of People with HIV. Additionally, recreational activities were promoted to strengthen the emotional and physical well-being of minors to ensure treatment adherence.

In 2004, the educational program “How Much Do You Know?” was consolidated, expanding community work through street information campaigns initiated in 1999. This program offers training to teachers, health professionals, students, companies, organizations, people with HIV and their families, providing clear, accurate, and updated information about HIV. The approach includes the development of life skills proposed by the World Health Organization, aimed at promoting the eradication of stigma and discrimination. The program incorporates Neurolinguistic Programming tools to update false beliefs and promote inclusive language. By integrating these skills into daily life, people are empowered to take care of their health, improve their quality of life, and value the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Due to the complex humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, between 2016 and 2019 AFA implemented the Healing Program in 21 states, ensuring the delivery of infant formula to mothers who could not or should not breastfeed. Formula provision was ensured from birth through 12 months of age to guarantee the optimal development of babies.
The program established a national network of allies comprised of pediatricians, nutritionists, and civil society organizations, who conducted monitoring using height and weight indicators. Additionally, a logistics alliance was consolidated to ensure distribution in each state of the country. More than 2,000 babies were served, offering nutritional, medical, and social care in highly vulnerable contexts.
