AID FOR LIFE expands its mission and runs legal program in New York City
In June 2023, AID FOR LIFE (AFL) and Golden Verità Group (GVG), an immigration document preparer company based in Miami, FL, held the first Ruta al Asilo legal jornada in New York City, where more than 100 asylum seekers submitted their application to USCIS electronically.
In July 2023, AFL and GVG signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a formal relationship between both parties to assist asylum seekers in New York City by offering pro bono legal services.
In August 2023, AFL and GVG held the second the Ruta al Asilo legal jornada in New York City, serving and impacting 400 people, submitting 120 asylum applications.
Since Spring of 2022, more than 100,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York City, with more than 65,000 coming from Central and South America. Once the migrant enters the United States, they have a one-year period to submit their asylum application. Not doing it on time can have serious consequences to later regularize their status.
At AFL, we have served more than 15,000 people with basic humanitarian assistance, donating clothing, shoes, food, and legal and health information. Through our legal program and partnership with GVG, we have supported more than 500 people, submitting their asylum application before the end of the one-year period.
